Doc here,
Without any exotic Rebuilds, and going low budget, the best shot Engine wise is: Mild Cam, New Carb or rebuild what you have, Full tune up..(all new stuff even if it looks OK) New fuel filters, A COLD AIR pickup for the air cleaner and low flow filter, Headers and low back pressure Exhaust (your choice on brand)Install an HEI ignition, 8.5 MM spiral core wires (for the new HV spark) and gap plugs at 45 instead of 35.. You could do NOX, but remember that engine IS 37 years old..use it sparingly.. With just that, you should notice a BIG difference in getum up go.. Doc
