69 Camaro Coupe to Convertible

Iíve got a 69 that Iím putting back togetherÖYet again. Iíve always thought of having a convertible and was thinking of making the great conversion. I know that many cringe at the thought. I havenít even made my own mind up yet, but am doing some research. I know that I would have to ad some subframe connectors, some crossovers from side to side on the frame, the upper rear outer body panel with the trunk lid hinges etc. Thereís some rust on the lower portion of both lower quarter panels, so I could replace those with the convertible panels. What are your thoughts? Is there any literature on the process?

more money than it's worth really, because by doing that, you devaluate the car. not to mention, you would have to have a '69 convertible as a parts car because you will need the covert windshield frame, and you will need the panal for below the rear window, as well as parts of the 1/4 panals, that and the convertible top bows, motor, latches. probably have a nicer coupe than you would if you vert'd it. there are fiberglass '69 convert bodies made, that would be a better choice if you wanted a convert, then swap over your subframes and everything else.

It really is a TOTALLY different car realistically. Did you know it even has a smaller windshield for instance? I believe the door glass is even different.

If you really want a convertible, buy one of those repro bodies and stick all your coupe stuff on it and then you will only have about five thousand more dollars of conv only parts to buy, oh, wait a minute, just buy a conv it will be cheaper.

If you want to make a "sun car" and just lop the roof off your coupe than do it. But don't think you can "make a conv". Yes, it is possible, but so is making it into a 67 Camaro, it just isn't worth it.

Some great advice posted here about forgetting it!

I have personally converted two old stangs to convertibles and even with a convertible parts car that is just about mandatory unless your a magician with sheet metal its just not worth it and when you are done chasing little parts it will have cost you more than if you purchased a restored real convertible.

Were all aloud to be stupid twice, I guess but there is not enough money out there for me to be stupid the third time.

Entire floor structure is different on a stang. I restored a 65 convertible and could not figure out why the supplier kept sending the wrong carpet and door scuff plates and the new kick panels didnt fit right either.After a little research(Mustangs are not my thing) i found out that someone had sectioned in an enire floor,rocker to rocker,firewall to trunk and it was out of a coupe. So after a LOT of money and a ton of work the owner had a restored convert with a scabbed in floor. You can tell the difference in the floors without even opening the door if you know what your looking at.
