69 camaro steering wheel installation

I've got a 69 RS Camaro that I'm attempting to put the original plastic steering wheel on but the steering shaft isn't long enough for me to install the steering wheel. What am I doing wrong? Funny thing is that I'm the one who took the old steering wheel off several weeks ago to fix an ignition switch problem. Thanks for any help

If the shaft doesn't stick out of the housing far enough, you have managed to push the shaft hard enough to slide it in the collapsible section. It can be pulled back up with the tool used to push the lock plate. I don't remember if the 69s had a lock plate but it will still work. It gives you something to pull with. Technically, the column should be replaced, but realistically, there are alot of them being used every day that have been collapsed and pulled back out. This is for the doubleD shafts not the mesh ones.
