69 Chevelle distributor problem

im working on a 69 chevelle SS 396 its the post type is this the chevelle 300 the problem im having is the points when i hook the wire from points to the wire from the coil it grouds out and the wire becomes dead what am i doing wrong the wires from switch i got going to the + side and the wire from the - side to the points is this right

If the points are closed it is supposed to ground that wire. I have a wiki article on troubleshooting ignition issues. If you go step by step you will find your issue. Did you gap the points, did you try to start the car?
