'69 Cutlass Bench seat/floor shifter?

I tried searching for this but found very limited results. I want to switch to a gate style shifter in my '69 Olds cutlass conv. (bench seat)/reverse manual TH400, trying to eliminate overshifting at the track. It seems like hurst 1/4 sticks and B&M Pro sticks are too short to comfortably use with my bench seat (which is a problem with the large amount of street driving the car sees). It almost seems like the perfect spot for the shifter is on the seat (like where an armrest would be). I'm not opposed to building something to do this, I was just wondering if anyone has done this, seeing as I couldn't find any decent google pics of it. The hard part is, I'm also trying to do it tastefully without giving away the sleeper image of the car (which packs a pretty snotty 455 but looks 100% stock on the outside) so I'de like to have some kind of console that sort of looks like it's supposed to be there. Any suggestions?
