69 firebird with olds 455?

Hello all. I need a little help. I have a 69 firebird with a 350. I was given an olds 455. How hard would it be to put it in. Do I need motor mounts, will trans work etc. Is it worth the trouble? Any help is greatly appreciated.

re: 69 firebird with olds 455?

A guy around here put an Olds 455 in a Camaro. Had trouble with hood clearance in the fan area. Probably could be remmedied with an electric fan. The Olds sits a bit higher than the 350.

re: 69 firebird with olds 455?

Yes you will need to change the motor mounts for this swap how ever the firebird was available with an olds 403 in the late 70's and used pretty much the same subframe so you could get those engine mounts which would work on the olds 455. They should be easy found in wrecker or even purchased new.If you engine is a pontiac 350 the tranny should bolt right up to the olds engine how ever if its a chev 350 you will have to get a tranny with the buick pontiac olds bolt pattern as its different from chevy's. I think all in all it wouldn't be a hard swap to make and old 455's are pretty nice engines so I'd go for it. The easiest route of course would be to get a pontiac 455 which assuming its a pontiac 350 in it right now would bolt right in you would even be able to see the difference.

It should be fairly easy as was stated. I think the Olds is a better choice for many reasons, I think overall it has better potential and is a better engine than the the Poncho.

re: 69 firebird with olds 455?

Beware! although not directly involved in the project,a friend of mine assumed that sense he saw a camaro with a 350 olds in it a 455 would be a slam dunk both being 69. It didn't turn out too good, the thing sat in laid to one side and the exhaust was against the A arm. When I asked what the problem was he disgustedly replied ,Its wider than the 350, to wide to fit. I wouldn't have asked but his hood wouldn't close right. he ended up putting a Pontiac 455 in,said it went in slick. check your width.

re: 69 firebird with olds 455?

Isn't the olds 455 and the Pontiac 455 the same engine?
The mid 70s trans ams had a 455 .And the 7o full size Pontiac had a 455.

If nothing else set the engine in and make the frame towers fit it.
If a BB chevy will fit, then the 455 will go in.

NO! The Olds, Pontiac, and Buick 455's are all as different from each other as night and day.

I couldn't disagree more with the comment that the poncho 455 isn't as good an engine infact I think the poncho 455 is with out a doubt supior not to say the old 455 isnt a good engine which it is.and yes the old 455 and the pontiac 455 are completly different.
