Hey Mike, welcome to the site. Kay, I still love ya dear

Mike I got some info for you on the old stangs you need to be aware of. I have a '69 coupe and here's what I've run into. The cowl on these things are really poorly designed. The welds are on the bottom of the collection pan, so water sitting on the seams will rot them out causing water to drip down the firewall. After making its way down to your floorboards, almost every single one I've seen has holes rusted out in it. I was lucky to have one with very little rust cause the guy had a plexi cap on the cowl vent to keep water out in the first place. If you see one of those on a mustang that looks like it's been on there a while, BUY IT!!!!!!

This isn't too difficult to fix, as long as you don't mind tearing the interior out and welding in new floorboards. If the rust has been there too long and spread to your frame, you are in big trouble. Once it gets the frame, you might as well consider it a parts car unless you strip the car down to the frame and send it off to have it professionally rebuilt. Don't ever trust yourself doing this unless you do it for a living.

Anyway, that's the front of the car, the torque boxes in front of the rear wheels is the same way. Just push on the quarter panel to get the back end to twist to the side, if it sounds like a bag of pringles near the wheels, down to the frame she goes.

If you do decide to sell it, I know some guys that need one for a parts car. If not, good luck and lemme know how it comes along. Peace.

The passenger floor looks good but the drivers floor does have some rot, a place about the size of your hand. The lower rear quarter panels also have some rot the passenger side is the worst, it look like at some time there was a can of gas treatment that fell down inside the trunk and busted. I have found replacement floor pans but I haven't seen replacement rear quarter panels. Anyone know where I can find them? The thing you said about the torque boxes in the rear can you explain that better?

Check out Rich_Long He has some good progress pics of his '68 fastback on there.

Here is another example.

The torque box is pretty much where the twisting action of your rear end is absorbed. When you hit the gas, it's the part that strains. If you beef up your engine, trans, tires and such for performance, one good launch off the line will put too much pressure on these to hold if they're rusted out.

As for the quarter panels, I have no idea where you can get full ones. NPD has a warehouse in Charlotte where I get all my parts. Call the number for a free catalog. They only have the quarter skins though. Like I said, parts car is what you might be looking for.

How far along are you?

I'm actually in the very beginning. I had the car for a little over a month now and the only thing Ive done is general cleaning. Took the cowl panel off removed leaves and dirt. wiped down the interior removed the seats for cleaning and all the easy stuff. We are trying to buy a house and trying to get the down payment and still keep the car. Ill know by the end of next week if Im going to have to sell it or not. If I do get to keep it Ill probably send it to a shop somewhere to have the work done. I would like it to be in the very nice everyday driver condition. I guess that mean I also need to build a garage where Im moving to.

Pick up a tube of body seam sealer at your auto boby paint store and seal the seam in the collection pan. You will have to remove the vent assy in front of the windshield to access this. Retest with lots of water in and around the cowl area to verify you have fixed the leak. Yea, my driver side floor is rusted too.

Friend of mine has a '66 fastback with a BUILT 351W in it. He broke one of his cam lobes which caused a heluva backfire through his carb. There was char on the inside of his hood since he was dumb enough to never use an air cleaner. Anyway, upon removing his new edlbrock carb, he realized that a backfire like that destroyed his power valve among other things. He was lucky enough to not run the car long enough to catch the carb on fire, but he still destroyed it enough to decide to buy a new 4bl Holley instead.

I hope you know you got your hands on a gold mine if you take the time to do it right. Get that thing in a garage as soon as you can and put about 2 years of work into it. You'll be glad you did.
