Post 7.5" 10 bolt posi unit

I bought a posi from a freind for $100.How can you tell with out installing it and tromping on it if its close to rebuild time??Can you visualy inspect it??
Also the diff is a 3.08 and down carrier.I'm told I can use gears for a 3.23 and up carrier with the use of a spacer is this true or do I have to buy a set of gears for the 3.08-down carrier??
If I gotta buy a new set,I'm lookin at either another set of 3.42s or upping to 3.73
Thanks

My car should be pushing 325hp/365tq flywheel so I'll prolly be putting 250rear wheel HP to it.
My uncle had a Monza that ran 6.3 1/8mi on the 7.5" 10 bolt.Allthough that car did snap an axle once.

if it is an old style eaton (with all the whirlygigs in with the side gears ind clutches)
i would run it till it pukes then scrap it.
over built rotating junk heaps they are.
i might have some used gears for that laying around, i'll check to see.

I've been doing similar research for my '86. I learned (I think) that you can either use a spacer or they make thicker rings gears that will fit the 3.08 & down unit.
