Secure the proper slip yoke and install into the trans until it stops. Pull the yoke back out 1" to 1 1/4". Measure from the centerline of the front joint to the centerline of the pinion yoke joint.

70 chevelle driveshaft lenght

I asked the other day but I guess something happened and I never got to see an answer,.... does anyone know the lenght of a driveshaft for a 70 chevelle from center to center of the u-joints? the trans is a th400 w/4" tail, and the rear end is a 10 bolt.

Wait.
Guessing on driveshaft length is ridiculous, not to mention expensive.
Yoke variances, suspension height, and drivetriain mounting can and will afffect this. Patience !!

It sounds like you are bolting the vehicle together for the first time......do it once correctly

I don't remember locking it , was one of the originals locked before I merged the two posts?

Anyway, Chazmac and Crosley are right, driveshafts are NOT cheap.
I had a quote from a nationally recognized driveshaft specialist for over $1200 for my truck because they wanted to make one out of carbon fiber for the length I needed.

The local driveshaft shop gave me a quote of $120 with the same guarantee the national guy put on his, and the local guy built it out of steel.

Like they also said, get the engine and transmission mounted in the car before you measure for the driveshaft.

Measure twice, pay the guy once.

Im doing a fully stock setup. I can get a driveshaft for about $25-70 used. I just wanted someone with the same car and specs to gimme a lenght. This is the first time Ive done THIS car,.. certaintly not the first time building a car. SBC and BBC have the same mount to transmission lenght and the 70 had both 4" tail th400 and both sbc and bbc engines. Its not a custom fit. Ive already found an answer from another source. Thanx though.
