The only time I has seen the case break around the bellhousing bolts is when someone has tried to pull up the trans to an engine using the bellhousing bolts.....they ain't designed for that and will break the trans case.

GM actually built a stamped steel cover for that application too. SO I would think the case is plenty strong enough.
