The 366 is (sorry to say) about the least performance potential of most engines. Its a tall deck engine meaning it requires a specific intake, headers, and many other parts. Its taller which means it won't fit in most cars, and its much heavier. The 366 is a very small bore that can't be enlarged much, pistons are tall, heavy, and have four rings. From the factory it had about 7.9:1 compression.

It maximizes weight and size, but minimizes displacement. Not a good combo. These days people are building 400-lb aluminum 427 small blocks, so an 800-lb 366 that won't fit in most cars isn't all that attractive to me.

Anything CAN be done, but you can get 700 hp from an LS2 on a light spray of Nitrous. The 366 is much like the 305; its not just the low displacement, its all the other things that just don't suit it well to performance. It can be done, but just not practical with the numerous lighter, cheaper options out there.

Now, a 427T is a different story. Respectable bore size with meat to bore means you can stuff some decent pistons in it with a monster stroke and get a powerful combo (still heavy though.)
