This is for swapping out a TH400 for a 700R4. http://www.rowand.net/Shop/Tech/Auto...issionSwap.htm but has most Info you need.
The 700R4 is 3" longer than the TH350 w/6" tailhousing so the Driveshaft may need to be shortened. If your Truck's TH350 has a 9" tailhousing they're basically the same length.

700r4 is 6" longer then a short tail 350. I swapped a 350 for 700r4 in my 72 monte carlo and had to have 6 inches taken out of the drive shaft.

the yokes are the same.. the problem is.. you have a "V6" 700r4.. it won't last long behind a v8.. it has fewer clutch plates in the clutch packs.

the crossmember should work just fine, but you have to modify how it mounts to the frame.

in my '72 I use an early impala crossmember (Bolts directly to the frame, the 1st gen mc's used rubber isolators that nobody reproduces)
it fit both my th350 and my 700r4 just fine.. and my frame had the holes already drilled in the right place for the 700r4.

if you are not using a QuadraJet carb, you MUST have a 700r4 TV Geometry correction kit installed.. holley and edelbrock both make them for their carbs, bowtieoverdrives.com also sells their own kits.

you will have a problem with the 'shift gate' on your 3spd shifter not lining up with the 700r4's 4 spds.. particularly low-1.. the distance between low 2 and low 1 is HUGE compared to the rest. I got around this by using an aftermarket ratchet shifter

Kc8oye, I think you need to remeasure. The 700 is 3" shorter + or - 1/16". http://www.tciauto.com/Products/TechInfo/trans_dims.asp compared to the TH350 w/6" Tail.
Are you sure you shortened the Stock Driveshaft?

Also there're 2 different GM Throttle Shaft patterns for the Q-Jet, one has geometry & Stud location for a Detent cable & the other has it for TV cable.

I'm Positive. I took the stock th350 trans out, replaced it with a 700r4, measured u-joint to u-joint per the machine shops directions, and had 6" removed from my drive shaft.

Currently, I'm 1300 miles from the car, so I can't go and measure it for you..
I did the entire swap myself, with the exception of having a machine shop shorten and re balance the driveshaft for me.

are there multiple tail housings for a 700r4? mine came out of a late 80's chevy pick up.

700r4 in place of the 9'' TH350 is a direct swap lengthwise.

Th350 with a 6'' tail would require 3'' off the driveshaft.

My 76 came with a 9'' th350 so direct swap w/o cutting the driveshaft. The 77 should be the same unless its got the th400 like my 79 did.

i don't know what to say.. I just know I had a 350/350 setup. and when I changed to a 350/700 I had to have 6" taken out of the driveshaft.

here's a shot of my 700r4 tail shaft... maybe it's different? *shrug*
click on it for full size.

Slide it back & drill new mounting holes in the Frame.
On 'some' vehicles the Crossmember can be turned around so the Trans mounting Pad aligns. Some the mounting Pad on X-member can be cut & moved etc..
