I'd like to say that it would be better just to get a 700-R4 4x4 tranny out of a wrecked Blazer or something and put it in your 2WD application car because the 700s are great transmissions but the standards are notorious for giving out when they become under load (a lot of towing) after a great amount of use. I don't know if your 4x4-ing will be excessive or not but I'd like to say it puts the same strain on it as it would towing. Then I'd get the correct crossmember (if the old one doesn't work) and then find the correct dimensions for your "new" drive axle.
