700R for 4L60E swap?

OK, I've posted a question about this before I knew what the details were, but here's a recap: I looked tonight at a '93 Chev conversion van with a TBI 350 and I now know is a 4L60E (I was hoping it'd be a 700R4) as a potential donor vehicle for my '47 Diamond T pickup.

It really does run nice, fires up instantly, no smoke, no misses, complete, driveable but dirty. I don't want the 4L60E, but am considering the van as it's complete, I can sell the rind, it has a set of 20" wires with knockoffs and adaptors which I think I could off on ebay, and it's cheap. I'd replace the TBI with a carb, use a conventional distributor, toss the electronics and swap a 700R4 trans.

Deal of the century, bad idea, or big mistake? I like the idea of knowing the donor is complete and driveable, even tho I can't use alot of it, but I would have lots of needed little bits. Selling the rind for scrap and the 20's to some kid with a jacked up Electra 225 would recoup at least half the 950$ purchase, and I'll have a $500 dollar 350 as a base. I could use the entire thing if I wanted to use the vans harness and ECM, but I don't want to do that with this project, as I want to keep the DT's beautiful mechanical gauges. Silly, I know, but I want the the thing to look original at a glance.

I know what the carb, intake and distributor will cost, but how about the trans? Any ideas as to what a 700R will cost, and is there any demand for the used 4L60E aside from having it for a spare for my other two cars with one?

Anything I should know about the 700R4 swap like starter, flywheel, and the like? I know I'll need a TV cable linkage, and are they mechanical or electrical speedo drive? Simple questions, but I usually buy a complete donor as a start in order to keep the build simple, I'm not used to mixing and matching stuff.

Input is appreciated. I could go with a crate motor and trans, but I just can leave the "do-it-yourself" donormobile concept for building a car behind.

Brian

Actually the 4L60E is a good thing,it has all the upgrades that some of the earlier 700R4's did not, if you go to www.transmissioncenter.net they can supply you with what you need to use it without the computer, call their Tech line and they will give you the right advice, these guys are the Kings of Overdrive

hey don't sell all the van's parts, USE them, don't get rid of the electronics, why you want to do that? you'll love your diamont T wit EFI, it will fire up instantly as you already know, have a decent millage, very smooth shifts, run on cheap gas, only pro's here, plus don't have to spend any more money buying parts like manifold, distribuitor, carb etc, if for a strange reason you want to spend more money, buy the TBI manifold from edelbrock, put a injector spacer, a K&N filter and no more, (maybe a mild cam designed for TBI) chevy's TBI motors are great for swaps, I would take everything including the RW ABS, swap everything from it to your truck, the a/c also, you can even use the electronic dashboard gauges, just put the guts of them inside your old cases, you'll love it.

I'm not a fan of the TBI, but if its what you want and in the condition you describe, go for it. You can sell the 4L60E and replace it with a 700r4, then find a chip for a manual vehicle to install if you want to keep the TBI. The stock PCM handles the 4L60E, and without the electronic tranny there it gets a little confused. Putting the chip in for a manual will clear that up.

So, anyway you look at it, you can keep it all electronic, ditch the electronic tranny, or ditch them both. The only thing you can't do cost-effectively is remove the EFI and keep the 4L60E since that requires a standalone aftermarket controller that can be pricey.

daily driver = TBI + 4L60E
exotic daily driver = TPI + whatever
strip racer = carb or aftermarket EFI + manual shifter

if you're gonna use a 700R4 I think a manual ECM is for you but a 4L60E will work also.

early TBI's are very user friendly and you can get all the parts at any junkyard.

but I personally use a 4L60E with all the electronics instead of the "dumb" 700R4, I would get all the guts from a C1500 pick-up and transplant in your ride, I already did this, got a wrecked '93 C1500 and removed all the drivetrain and installed into a '76 pontiac, that baby rocks!
