700r shifting problems

I have a 1987 Chevy p/u with trans. problems (700R)
it shifts from 1-2 hard but no 3rd or overdrive
when it gets to 3rd it is like it is in neutral

check the TV cable, make sure it`s not broken or off, or just simply out of adjustment, check the govenor out also, lastly, pull the dipstick, and see what color the fluid is, if it`s black and smells burned, the tranny is cooked and needs a rebuild, if this is the case, install a external trans cooler after the rebuild and bypass the radiator cooler. Number 1 cause of auto tranny failure is heat.

Will check the cable and governor.
The fluid is good an it has the external cooler on it.
