the reason the transmission is binding in 4th gear and it cooked the band is that the forward clutch friction and steel plates are installed wrong. starting with the overrun clutches it goes steel, friction, steel, friction then the forward clutch apply plate. its the one with square ears on it. then the aluminum spacer. then the waved steel then forward friction and alternating the rest of the way. easy thing to look over. the reason it binds is that the overrun clutches have to spin faster than the forward drum during OD. that is the reason for the sprag clutch that the overruns and forward clutch pack is on. and with the plates in wrong the ears on the forward apply piston arent long enough to allow the overrun clutches to spin freely causing a lockup.
