Unhappy 700r4 3-4 clutch pack

Crosley is right on in that the 3-4 clutch is a weak point in this transmission. GM made several upgrades to this part over the years trying to overcome its weakness. Ronb is also on track in mentioning the TV cable. The TV cablbe is often mistaken for a kickdown cable(as used in the TH350). It is not a kickdown cable. It is the transmission's only link to driver input and controls line pressure according to throttle position. Misadjustment of the TV cable will severely shorten service life of this transmission.

I just finished the overhaul of my 700R4. I am not a transmission expert. I have had some experience with these units and I am a Master Auto Technician and perform advanced automotive repairs regularly. This means that I have tools, a clean work space, and am accustomed to D&A of technically advanced components. I think these must be necessary factors for anyone considering this job. I also, inspite of my OCD and ending up with sleepless nights as the job neared completion, had the patience to wait and save funds until I was ready to do the job right. I spent alot of time studying the internal workings of this transmission and asked alot of questions. When the time came for assembly, I still ended up with more questions and I am fortunate to have had an expert who was willing to help me at that time. Also, even with all the tools that I already had, there was one that I had to buy.

I built this trans to live behind my 450HP small block that shifts at 6,300rpm and my parts list totalled about $1,800. Even at this, there is still more that I am now wishing I would have done and I am already planning my next foray into the unit to replace the rear planet with a 5 pinion piece, probably next year.

I separated your new post from a 9 year old thread. Best to read dates on threads when searching
