I picked up a 700R4 today for $40, it needs a rebuild, it came out of a 1992 GMC pickup with a 4.3 V6. was there any difference in the V6 version and the V8 version like GM did TH350`s? I plan to put this behind a mildly stout small block. Are 700`s hard to build? I`ve built several Th350`s but never fooled with a 700. I can get the kit and converter at cost through a friend, I could also have him build it, but I`d rather do it myself and save the $. Any info is appreciated.

There is no difference in the v6 and v8 trans. Now to the second question, evidently they are much harder than the 350. I guess there is much more to go wrong. I've bought 2 through ebay and had one rebuilt locally. The one I had rebuilt locally is the only one that lasted. But the local guy doesn't do performance builds. Too many weak links, but obviously folks like Bowtie Overdrives have it figured out cause their still in business. I guess that's what I'll try next.

A competant transmission man knows the weak links of the 700R4 and they can easily be corrected during a rebuild. As long as you get a core that is newer than about 89 you are OK. The 700R4 is an excellent transmission for the street rodder. It has no more faults than any other auto trans IMO. The 700R4 in my 90 full size Chevy truck has been pulling strong for 150K, but it has been serviced every 30K.

actually i think the 3-4 cluch pack or the l/r pack one of thoes has less clutches in the v6, but if you are doing a rebuild it doesent really matter
