700r4

I have read one horror story about using a manual valve body in a 700R4 on this site. It ended with the person removing the valve body and putting the stock one back (I think it was a TCI unit). Has anyone esle got any experence with a manual valve body for this transmission? Does this eliminate the tv cable? Any help or suggestions. This will be in a t bucket with a pretty sstong 454 BBC.
Thanks
Randall

Ive had a tci full manual VB on a 700r4, which was fitted (followng bad advise) to solve a problem with a slipping 4th gear - fault was unrelated to the VB. I kept it on for a while, but then swapped it back to full auto. Fitting was straightforward with no issues - i was trying to help the other guy who was having problems.

Likes:
Can change gear when and how you like, very snappy.
Could be useful for dyno runs/tuning

Dislikes
Shifts a bit harsh, because the TCI kit elimimates the accumaltors which cushion things.
will let you down shift or bang the wrong gear at any speed - i got flustered and slammed it back into 1st instead of 3rd at WOT !!

I missed the kickdown, or rather the knowledge that it would only kickdown if you wasn't going too fast in the current gear, wheras with the manual - it's your call - you could easily over-rev it accidently.

I guess what im saying, is that its designed for strip use, which is where it should be predominantly used.

Finally, I dont think a 700r4 is going to last long behind a stout bbc - ive spent alot of money getting mine to last behind a turbo'd sbc - think about th400 or 4l80e (which PATC sell with a full manual conversion)

Thanks Elliot for the information. I am having serious reservations about the valve body. I was planning on putting alot of the heavy duty items in the trans to prevent most problems. There seems to be plenty of them out there. This is also going in a very light weight car so under hard starts the rear tires will most likely be the frist to go. Its funny that you mention a turbo 400 as I just finish cutting out the crossmember and removing the one I had in there in preperation for the 700R. What I really wont is the OD function of the trans. The other reason for the 700R is the "E" versions need some more wiring and in this car that is kept to an absolute minimum. Again thanks for the post I will consider everything.
