The check ball locations differ slightly for different years.... mid 1987 was the change.

Does your trans have the aux valve body at the rear of the valve body area or not?

Early v-body will have 3 check balls... the separator plate is checked for dual holes at the bath tub area in the v-body.

Witness marks on the separator plate are your friend when chasing down locations for check ball

early design valve body check ball locations.

Bath tub area in the yellow circle upper right side of photo; check the separator plate for dual (2) holes over the bath tub area.
