700r4 conversion install problems

I recently installed a 700r4 transmission in my 68 camaro which had a turbo 350 in it. The rebuild went smoothly until I bolted the tranny to the engine and started it up. There was a loud clacking noise coming from the Torque converter. This was a B&M torque master 2000 stall brand new that was filled with fluid before install and seemed to slide into the tranny with all the proper clearances. when I bolted the tranny to the block, I had about 1/4" clearance between the flywheel and the converter. I did not install a new flywheel. I pulled the transmission back down and removed the converter and installed another new torque converter this time from TCI. Reinstalled the tranny and got the same result. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am on the verge of insanity.
