Hello i have a '66 impala with 700r4 and i went to change the headers on the engine so i put the car up on jack stands, front and back, to get space under the car. After all said and done and i went to start the car the wheels were spinning constantly, i cant get it to go into neutral. The only thing on the transmission i touched was the cable in the output shaft housing which i thought was the speedo cable, it was loose so i tightened up the nut. Was this not the speedo? i dont know what went wrong as the problem seemed to come out of no where, any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Are you saying that the rear wheels are off the ground and that with the engine running, and the trans in PARK that the rear wheels are turning?

What about stepping on the brakes, and then putting the trans in REVERSE with the wheels off the ground, do the wheels then go backwards?

It's normal for the wheels to turn forward even when in NEUTRAL with no load (off the ground). Once you put the rear wheels on the ground, if you put it in NEUTRAL the car should not move.

Can you give us more information???

Yea the reverse gear is working fine wheels spin backwards. And yes the car is supported by jack stands wheels off the ground. Sounds like this is normal then? I assumed that in neutral there is no connection between input shaft and drive line.
