700R4 identification

Hi all,

I just registered so you'll have to excuse me if this question has already been answered. I searched the messages but couldn't find the answer I was looking for.

I bought a 700R4 transmission off a fellow's garage floor. He didn't know exactly what vehicle it came out of but he knew it was a match to replace his own transmission in his pickup, a mid eighties Chevy.

The tranny has these number stamped on the rear right hand side just above the pan/gasket line : 5TG251CT

Can anyone tell me what those numbers and digits represent? I believe the first number (5) means 1985. I'm at a loss for the rest.

Thank you for your help.

This has been gone over to death, but since you are a newbie. . .
Look in the Transmission Information sticky post at the top of the Transmission/ Rearend forum, and there will be a couple links to just what you are looking for.

I would look into a rebuild of that transmission with all the upgrades to make it a good transmission.
