700R4 into 1956 Dodge questions

Okay, looks like I've decided to go with a 700R4 tranny into our '56 Dodge CRL, 315 V8 Poly, stock w/ mild cam regrind.

I want a nice long trip tranny w/ OD and still be able to smoke the tires once in awhile at the cruise night. It seems to me that the 700R4 would be the easiest fit w/o cutting up the floor for the fat A518. Hot Heads makes the adapter for the early Hemi block, so no issue there.

If I want a 700R4 for trip mileage, good all-around performance, which year(s) should I be looking at? (late '87 up to '92?, other years?) I would also like to be able to tow a small 10'-12' older travel trailer on a couple long trips if at all possible.

Given this, what exact year(s), torque converter, maybe year and make of auto, should I be looking for in a used 700R4? I have a good connection to getting these at good prices and decent short-term warranty.

Is there anything else I need to tell my guy to look out for? Any help is appreciated.

87-93, the newer the better. The Vette, TransAm & Camaro will have the best stock Valvebody & Governor calibration.
If you plan to do Towing you'll need to upgrade several pieces, 3-4 clutches, HD Torque Converter w/HD Lockup Clutch, lube mods etc... stock 700R4 isn't design for towing in 4th gear.
There's another thread with good Info on building a 700R4 for towing with parts Info etc... Do a search in Trans/Rear section.

A Corvette trans 4l60-700r4 design will have a shorter special design tail housing for a torque arm, the out put shaft is shorter, there is no bolt holes on the main case for a trans mount to bolt to

Thanks guys, that '87-93 is what I'll shoot for. As far as towing, I was only thinking of a really small trailer, maybe 10'-12' was too long. I was hoping I could drag one, going a reasonable slower speed, to a car show or two. But you guys think I will have to open her up and have it modified to do even that?

Guess the trailer deal may have to wait awhile 'til I get the car put together and a couple road trips under my belt. I've seen pics of the '55-'56 Dodges pulling old RV trailers. Propaganda pics I suppose! lol

If you are going to tow a small trailer while in over-drive , buy the Sonnax billet over drive servo.

I've put 100k miles on 4l60e trans with the Sonnax servo and towed loaded car trailer (open trailer- aluminum trailer) while in over-drive on level ground
