700r4 loose output shaft

Not a hotrodder but I always rebuild my own trans. I have a 92 Silverado with 360 degree movement at the output shaft/drive shaft yoke. Also some loud clanging when I put it in drive. I have ruled out Loose u-joints and rear end damage. I,m wondering if the half inch snap ring on the output shaft to planetary gear is missing or broken. I bought the truck two years ago with this problem .

I've never seen a 1/2 inch snap ring on these shafts. Movement is common side to side of the out put shaft. The rear case bushing may be worn and making the movement seem worse

Remove your drive shaft and inspect the groves inside of the yoke and see if their straight or twisted in the area as deep as the output shaft goes in the yoke (about 3-4 in. inside). If they are, you need a new yoke. This will happen after time due to heavy towing, or hard acceleration from a stop.
Check the outside of the yoke for wear, if there is any grooves worn into it it also needs replaced. Like CROSLEY said, the tail shaft bushing may be worn excessively and may need replacement. It's not a costly job to replace it you just need the right tool that would cost more than the bushing. A tranny shop will have it and it can be done on the car. It's a wonder your not having any vibration from the drive shaft or fluid seepage yet but you didnt say.
CHEVY350sb needs to do the same inspection. I've had drive shaft vibration
from a worn tail shaft bushing that was worn .040 on one side.

Thanks for the info fellas. Not sure if I am responding correctly to your message. I,m an old guy, ( 61) , the internet and computers in general are two months old to me so feel free to correct me when I respond wrong to your help messages. Not sure if I should put my user name in title block or thread 700r4 loose output shaft. I have never rebuilt a 700r4 before but I have built 4l60e and they have a half inch i.d. snap ring holding the output shaft to the reaction carrier. The yoke is good and I,m sure there is some wear on the housing bushing but this is an enormous amount of movement. The previous output shaft seal was seeping because it was damaged by the previous installer. I replaced it about 6 months ago and it has not leaked since. I will be tearing it down next week when the weather cools a little bit. I will post the exact cause once I am finished.

My 700r4 tranny output shaft does move all over with out the yoke on it, they all do. With a good bushing and yoke side to side movement should be limited, it's the final fit the smooths it out to limit vibration like the end of a shaft going into the hub of a front axle on a 4 wheel drive truck.
