I have a 700r4 with elec lockout in my 55 Chevy. It works fine but making a bad howl, sounds like a loud rear end howl. When I shift it manually, the howl starts when it shifts into 3rd. doesn`t do it in 1st or 2nd. I`m going to change the fluid and hopefully I find a plugged filter but if not, then I`m stuck. HELP! Thank You!

Might have a bushing that is worn out,and their are alot of bushings.If this trans has alot of miles on it or has had a hard life meaning its been on a high HP engine,then their are other bushings that are worn out also.The bushings that are in the middle of the trans dont wear out as fast as the ones at each end such as the bushing inside the pump that the torque converter rides on and the bushing inside the tail shaft housing.The bushings keep every thing in alignment,when one goes bad then input & output shafts are no longer aligned an gear teeth are out of alignment also.Look for small copper colored flakes in the pan.Another thing is it could be 50 other thing also.This is why nobody has answered your post,it could be alot of things and im just guessing......Other thing to check first are,rear diff,louse or miss aligned or worn out u-joints,drive shaft out of blance or drive shaft not indexed right.

Thanks for the reply, after I changed the oil and filter, it all looked brand new, I put the car up on stands, got under, had my wife in the car working the throttle and discovered that is coming from the rear end, I don`t know why it doesn`t make noise until it hits 3rd gear, but as soon as it does, it starts this howl, when the throttle evens out it kinda makes a skipping noise. I changed the rear end oil and it looks new also. It is a 9 inch ford and only has 4000 miles. Don`t know what to do next. Thanks!

That does sound odd especially only in 3rd and 4th gear.

Does it howl as soon as its in gear or only at a particular RPM?

Hey Thanks! It starts the instant that it shifts into 3rd, I can rev it up in 1st and 2nd with no noise, then shift to 3rd and it starts, noise remains into od. Thats why I thought it was trans, I can put my hand on dif and feel it. I`m stumped!
