700R4 mix-up

I'll try to keep this long story short. I picked up a '95 Blazer for $350 with a shot tranny. A buddy of mine found me a 700R4, in great shape for $150.

The dillemma: the 700 I bought came out of a '92 something or other so it won't work with the electronic mess that is a '95. I decided that rather than give up so quickly and shell out $600 at the junkyard for a mystery tranny, I would try a little experiment. I took the two trannies apart and I'm thrilled to find that all of the internal guts are identical outside of the gear on the end of the output shaft that mates with the governor. After a couple of hours of tearing the two down I reached my whole reason for this post.

I managed to get everything out with no problem until I came to the drum assembly. Being that I've never taken an A/T apart before, I'm pretty much stumped. I guess I'd say my question is, after pulling the input/clutch cluster out, what should I do next? Do I need special tools? I'm pretty sure the output shaft just needs a small snap ring removed located behind the small gear ring near the center of it but that still leaves the drum and the assembly holding the four gears that surround the shaft. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated :-D.

I'd suggest a book or someone educated on trannys to assist you since you are already in the middle of it

the TH700-R4 is the same transmission as a 4L60. What you have is a 4L60E. And there are a lot of differences in the two. Too many to list here.

It would probably be easier to trade the 700-R4 for a 95,96,97, 4L60E. It would be a lot easier than trying to fit the electronics into your 700.

the electronics of a 4L60E can not be retro fitted to a non electronic 4L60.

I believe the fellow is trying to install the good parts from the early trans into the later "E" unit to create a good trans for the vehicle.

His questions on parts , pieces and tools is why I suggested a book or a person with the needed knowledge to assist him.

headache

Yeah, I was hoping to spare some money by doing it the hard way but I decided to leave the trannys to the pro's, and I'm just going to do the smart thing and buy the right one. I appreciate the responses, this whole thing is turning into a big headache, but thanks for all the advice.
