hello guys, i have a problem i have hesitated on asking this question because i know that you get so many 700r4 posts. i purchased a rebuilt 700r4 about a year and a half ago, just put it in a couple of weeks ago. The TV cable is adjusted correctly. my trans will not downshift, no matter where my throttle is. if i am in od and i am doing about 45mph i can mash the throttle and nothing happens. this happens in all gears. the 4th gear example was just to show how drastic the problem is. is it possible that maybe a seal on the tv valve is leaking, or maybe the rebuilder forgot to put in a check ball or something. under normal driving the upshifts are excellent, under wot with the shifter in o/d it upshifts a little early but its firm. when shifting manually at wot most of the time the 1-2 transition is hard enough to spin my tires, but sometimes it wont hold the gear and just upshift anyway. any suggestions?

Without line pressure readings, I can only guess that the D3/Part throttle check ball is missing, if it is a trans problem
If the TV is correct, I am assuming that the TV cable is pulled tight at WOT.
Did you check the throttle (ACCEL) cable to be sure that the carb goes wide open when your accel pedal is on the floor?? This must be done with someone in the car and a second person looking at the carb. Without doing this, you do not know if you have WOT. Without WOT, the trans will not detent.........

bent or binding tv lever on valve body
missing t/v ck ball
t/v cable setting
stuck t/v valve
take your pick where to start, I have experienced all of the above and more....

yes i do have wot, that was one of the first things i checked. if the actual tv valve was stuck wouldnt the cable pop off the stud once it got too tight? airworld, i guess i should drop the pan and see whats going on. just curious where in the valvebody is the tv check ball located? it is possible that my tv lever is bent, because when i first first did the adjustment on the cable i wasnt pressing the adjuster hard enough and it just so happend my friend was stitting in the driver seat so i told him to give it wot. and boom the cable came off the stud, so i guess that may have jerked it pretty hard. i am not worried about burning up this trans because the shifts are so firm. i dont really have any time to jack it up and check, but i probably will on tuesday. i will let you know my findings

As I understand your post , the tranny will upshift to 2nd gear while the shifter is still in 1st gear...... This indicates an early 700 tranny.

I also wonder if some one installed a TV sleeve in the v-body designed for wide open throttle use in OD.....some of these sleeves do not provide detent oil at WOT to kick the tranny down to a lower gear. You must move the shifter out of over drive to 3rd gear

i will try it in d, it only goes into second without manually upshifting it rarely, but it does do it

ok crosley i drove it with the shifter in d, same problem... good thought though, i guess i will have to drop the pan and see whats going on.

i know this thread is old, but i started it and im still having the same problem. is it possible that my tv spring is too short, i was just doing some reaserch and apparently there is a long and a short spring. if i have the short spring i think that would cause the problems im having
