700r4 problems

what can be done to a 700r4 to make it better live under power, right now i go threw a trans about every 2 months depending on how much i take the car to the track.

what i do is basically get a trans and rebuild it with a tci streetfighter kit and drop it in the car.but its getting to dam exspensive to keep doing this.

the car makes just over 412rwhp so figure 450ish at the motor,i also run a tci 10 inch 4000 stall with lockup converter.i figure most of the abuse comes from on the starting line when i spool the turbo.as i stage the car i use the footbrake and e-brake to lock the back tires.which alkows me to go wot and spool the turbo to around 13-15 psi on the line without rolling threw the brakes.

if the 700 cant be made to live under these conditions what would my other choices for transmissions be.as far as i know i can use the 700 the t5 or a 300c???. cause i need a trans that will bolt to the gm 60*v6

A 700r4 built right should handle that much HP. IF you need the ultimate transmission then a powerglide or the TH400

You can find shops that can build a tranny such as this one
http://www.transmissioncenter.net/highperf700r4.htm#Stage4

I don't know anything about them. but search for one. Some people say you can not make a 2004r, 700r4 but all the late model GM over drives are updated 700r4's

Good luck with your trannies.

as far as i know they never made a turbo350/400 that will bolt to the 2.8/3.1/3.4 60* family of engines, so i am kind of stuck with a 700 or a t5.and with a turbo car the automatic is a much better choice.

maybe somone could point me to a company that could make me an adapter plate, cause id really love to put a power glide or turbo350 with a transbrake in the car.

most places that when i tell them that the trans is a v6 700r4 version do not wanna touch it or say they cant.though i have goten pretty fast at rebuilding them myself but that only goes as far as clutch/steel and band/seal replacements no real modifications to the trans.Other then a shiftkit, which i know the trans needs to survive.
maybe somone can point me in the right direction for valve body, and or other modifications i can do to the 700 to make it live longer

You're in the right place. A few very good people here that are VERY familiar with performance mods to the 700-R4.

What is done to it so far as far as upgraded parts?

this is the kit i belive that i have been using to rebuild them
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
thats not the exact kit mine is for a 27 spline unit but it should be the same otherwise

btw over the winter i plan on steping the motor up quite a bit switching to twin t4 turbos or a single garret gt42 to bring the power levels up around 650hp ish.
and i know the way im currently running the transmissions they deffinatly wont hold up

You can upgrade to the 30 spline input setup easily, but it will require a converter change also.

the problem with doing a 30 spline conversion is the converter, a stock v8 sized 12 inch converter will not fit inside the v6's bell housing. the largest converter that can be run inside the v6 bell housing is a 10 inch.and most 30 spline converters that offer a stall speed of over 3500 rpms is well out of my price range starting at about 1k each

You do not want a 12" converter that is a 3500 stall.
Most modern performance converters are built on an 8" or 9.5" core due to availability.

The 9.5 is would be a good unit for a 3500 stall. That should fit your trans and there are plenty of converter companies that offer a quality 9.5" lockup at reasonable prices.
Edge and PTC are two that I recommend often.

Crosley here works for Hughes and I know they also make a good converter. I have a customer using one of their hybrid converters behind a 4L80 and is very happy with it.

id really hate to have to change converters. i can get 4300 out of the one i have now and i was getting ready to send it out to have it restalled to 5,000.

by swaping to a 30 spline shaft what does it change as far as transmission strength. as of right now im not breaking any hard parts.right now im only burning up clutches in it.And that is my main concern

actually come to think of it i cant change input shafts, the 30 spline converters have a larger crank pilot and wont fit regardless even if it is a 9 or 10 inch converter
this is the converter i currently run in the car though it has been restalled once before already

It shouldn't be a problem to build a converter with a smaller crank pilot and larger turbine spline.

I don't build converters but I'm sure if you called Andre at Edge he could answer your questions.

Crosley here also can I'm sure.

Building boost in a static position with the smallish stock 27 spline input shaft is asking for failure IMO. Even with the 30 spline you'll be hard pressed to have it live when you up the power.

yeah ive been pretty lucky with the car so far, the entire car was built for around 2k,but its getting to the point were im breaking to many parts and cant afford to just keep throwing parts at the car everytime i run it.
was hoping there would be stuff i could do on my own to make it live then spend alot of money on it,lol then again with as many transmissions ive gone threw i coulda prolly just bought a built one by now, if i could find somone who will touch the v6 version of the 700 anyway

I will toss in a few comments.

the internal mods to any 700 will function on the V-6 bell 700 trans....

If you are not breaking hard parts at this point , any performance trans professional can build the small bell 700r4

there was an adapter to install a regular bell v-8 chevy design onto the small v-6 engine.... THis was available years ago when the 700 was failing left and right. I have not seen or heard of this adapter in yrs.
