An 85 chev stepside 4x4 followed me home in 85..It"s a 305ci with 308 gears.She"s definately not a 1/4 miler....

The trans started making a slight grinding noise when put into 1st or reverse.It starts out in first fine, but I have to drive around the block once to get it to shift. Once it shifts ur good to go. It"ll shift up and down all day with no probs. Fire it up in the morning and same thing over again.

Could it just be the torque converter as thats where the sound seems to be coming from?

Never driven hard but she"s got 150000 miles.

Any suggestions from you trans experts? Thx Ted

Wow. 150K on an original '85 700R4 is amazing in itself...
However, noise in 1st and reverse is usually the low/reverse planet.
The no-upshift cold/first of the day seems to be stuck TV valve or governor. They don't "fix" themselves by driving. I just know that a rebuilt trans will fix both problems. Make sure the check for planetary damage. If so, replace the trans cooler(s)

Is the noise there when sitting still but in gear? Or only when you begin to get it moving? If its noisey sitting still, the rear planet won't be moving yet and the noise could be from some other place.

yes its just a slight grinding noise in gear brake on........takes off in gear fine.....no slipping.....just wont change until I go around the block once or twice......go fish!!! Thx for the reply Ted.....

I would say that's your problem right there. hehe I just rebuilt my 700R4 and it had just over 100k miles on it. If it's grinding, you've got something inside that's not moving properly and the only proper way to find out is to pull it apart and have an "expert" look at it. Sorry I can't be of more help but those mid 80's GM vehicles have never done well once they hit 100k miles. Kind of like living on borrowed time after that! hehe Good luck Ted!

hehe I was referring to the 150,000 miles as your problem. The thing is just plain old and probably more than a little tired. I'm sorry I can't help more than that. hehe
