I have a 1984 Chevy Silverado, 305, 700R4. The tranny has reverse, and when driving, 1st gear is the only gear. It shifts from 1st to nuetral.
I understand that this a weak transmission off the get-go.
Does anyone may know what causes this, and also what 4l60 can I put into this truck with little modifications? I got the truck in this condition.

The 700r4 is weak if stock...if you get a good rebuild kit..the 700r4 will do the job and save you gas in the long run.just i would put all new thrust washers,backing plates,bearings...my 1st rebuild was a 700r4 it was easy but i was told i didn't need these parts well the trans shop was wrong.....$200.00 gone..rebuilt it the 2nd time i changed any parts that i thought might be bad...the 700r4 is still in my buddies truck.....the 4l60e is a up grade from 700r4. what do you use the truck for?

It will be used for transportation, no pulling trailers. Local drives only.
I've never rebuilt a trans before, using a video from ATSG, what would the difficulty level be? I'm mechanically inclined, and also pay attention to details.

I used a haynes tech book#10360 it covers the 700r4 but there is 3 types of 700r4 just see if your tran is a k if so your good to go. the turbine shaft oil seal rings HAVE to be put on with a tool ..i would take it to a shop just make sure they use the right tool...if the seals are not right it will be a waste of your time.the book will help you ,just take your time. that 700r4 was my first..if you need help let me know!

What is the history of this trans? Mileage , recent repair or service?



If this trans is going to neutral while in first gear, there is a problem with the forward clutch or roller sprag....

When this trans shifts to 2nd gear a band comes on and the forward clutch stays applied.

You could have a broken accumilator for 2nd gear and it blows off pressure... then the trans acts like it goes to neutral.

Many items could be the problem here.

A later 700 / 4L60 will bolt into the truck. The lock up wire harness would need to be addressed for proper operation of the converter clutch.
