700r4 question

While driving today, I had a down shift problem in my 67 camaro which has a 700r4. As I gave it throttle to downshift "passing gear", it wouldn't shift down. The engine also started sputtering as I gave it full throttle and it wouldnt down shift. As I left the next light I manually shifted the gears and it shifted fine, put it back in drive '4th gear' and punched it 'to downshift and it did the same thing. engine starts to sputter and wont kick down. I checked the tv cable when I got home and it seems to have full pull when full throttle. Checked the fluid level 'good'. Can worn out fluid do this or tranny getting hot? Or could it be a torque converter problem? I need some help on this one. I just dont to get ripped off just in case I have to take it somewhere.

Are you sure it's a trans problem?? A trans will not shift properly if the engine is not performing correctly. With the engine sputter you need to check the fuel filter or possibly fuel pump starving the engine for fuel. It may run good at slow to moderate speeds and fall on it's face when you need to get into passing gear. The reason I say this I have repaired a car for a friend who had a similar complaint, and have seen it several times since.I reread what you said about the T/V cable and it doesn't make it kick down it controls how soft or firm your shifts are. The governor controls the kick down. At least that's the way I remember it. Brian

I appreciate the info. Im going to take the car to a friends house and have him check it. I called him today and said to bring it over this weekend. Im hoping its a minor problem. Im hoping the kick down cable just needs adjusted. Ill let you know what happens. :(

Read this:

The TV cable is NOT a kickdown cable!

thanks, 38chevy3wcoupe, That's a really good article!! Lots of good info. I used to think the same thing, and on different transmissions years ago that is what that cable was!!! not so anymore. That's what I was tring to explain to danscam, I have seen transmissions do weird stuff when the engine wasn't performing properly. Brian
