700r4 question

I've got an 88 S10 4x4 w/ 350 sbc and 700r4 tranny. It does have a shift kit in it. When I'm runnin down the road bout 65-70mph I'm runnin at 2200-2500rpm. Is this normal for this tranny w/ a shift kit? I didnt put the tranny in, I was gone when they put it in and fixed it. I dont really know what all they done to it. I'm just wonderin if its normal for it? Thanks
-Justin

A shift kit should not affect your engine rpm at cruise. What is 'normal' for the tranny depends completely on your rear end gear ratio and tire size. If you have 3.73-4.11 gears and 27 inch or so tires, then your situation would be right. If your gears are a lot higher than that, it's possible the trans isn't shifting into 4th. I imagine you would have noticed that though. Either way, you're definitely not hurting anything by running in that rpm range.

Ok. Its got 4:11 gears and I'm runnin 31x10.50s so. Didnt know jus curious. Another question, would my shift kit make it shift hard? Especially hard from first to second, it barks the tires every time. Just wonderin on that too.

shift kit...

the shift kit will give you a firm shift, otherwise the trans just kinda slides from gear to gear, not really a firm shift.

Its a head jerker shift from first to second and a lil better from second to third. It shifts smooth into fourth. When I stomp on it I'll spin tires just a second and then it shifts all the way to fourth really quick! It hardly raises rpm when I do that.

Before you drive it much more, you should check and verify the TV cable geometry and function. The TV position can affect shift feel and shift times. If you search the site here on "TV adjustment", you will find quite a few posts on the correct setting.
