700R4 Rebuild/ No Reverse?

I have performed my first rebuild on a 700R4. Transmission is in 1991 Siverado 4 wheel drive.

I added 5 Qts fluid and started engine for about 45 seconds. Turned vehicle off and added 6 Qts fluid. Started vehicle up and ran in reverse for 45 seconds with rear jacked up. Tires turned in reverse fine at this time. Ran through forward gears a couple of times and removed from jack. Vehicle did not have reverse again? Vehicle shifts fine going forward but now has no reverse.
(If engine RPM is increased while in reverse, vehicle seems to try back up but barely moves. Clutch slipping? Wondering if piston is not applying enough pressure to clutch pack?)

When going from Park to Reverse or Drive to Reverse, it sounds like it is engaging. (Doesn't sound like solid engagement as Park to Drive does?)

I checked TV cable adjustment. Check ok. I will perform line pressure test and compare to book specs. If this pressure is low, is this telling me I have Reverse Clutch or Piston problems?

My first rebuild and any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
Rob

Hi,
Did you put any fluid in the converter before putting it in? it
will hold about 4 qts. while spinning.
It sounds as if there isn't enough fluid in the trans.

Hi,
If you don't have fluid in the converter it won't function, the pump will not self prime.

Would this hurt the transmission? As in the tranny fluid pump wouldn't prime?

If the torque converter was at fault then you'd have no gears - no forward and no reverse. The torque converter is not at fault in your case. You don't need to prime torque converters for them to work. A little amount of fluid may help with lubrication upon start up, but that's it. Your problem is within the box itself.

700R4 Repaired.

Thank you for the replies. I removed pan and found snap ring for Reverse Valve in pump pushed out. I installed in the first groove and it should have been up further in the second. Transmission now Drives in Reverse with no problem. Yes I did prime new Torque Converter on assembly. Thank you for the help, Rob

That's good news, and thanks for following up with the fix for your problem. Sometimes it's REALLY hard to diagnose without 'being' there.

My findings on torque converter 'priming' is that, yes it does not hurt, but will it keep the 'pump' from picking fluid up through the filter and thus filling the converter anyway? No. Even if the pump and TC was assembled/installed dry, it would pick up fluid.

It's like, yeah the bearings in my new engine will get oiled by the pump, but does anybody *really* sock one together dry?

Cheap insurance.
