700r4 reverse slippage

I recently put in a 700r4 in a 66 Pontiac w/ a chevy 454.I was told the trans was somewhat fresh so I threw it in w/ a shift kit.I haven't driven it but so far it goes forward no prob. But it slips bad in reverse. Now,did I do something wrong,or did I end up w a P.O.S.?I have rebuilt a few th350s but Im trying not to do this one,Any tricks or experiments I could try?I was told to try driving it around a little and then trying it but that sounds kinda dangerous on the trans if its some thing traumatic.Ive never had to drive it around or warm it up to get a trans to grab that wasn't already junk.Should I maybe drive it to see if I have all my forward gears?Im a little nervous about doing that w the reverse not grabbing.I really wish I would've tried it before putting in the kit!Any help would help this cruz ship do 11"s! thanx a lot folks..Woody

Late reader of your post. It seems a lot of the 700 had this problem. No expert on the 700. Did you drop the pan and see what it was like inside before you put it in. Have you got the TV CABLE set up right? You've got to put a tranny gauge on it to see what your pressures are and that will tell you a lot about each gear including reverse.

Put the gauges on it and see what kind of pressures you have and make sure, there up to the task.
