700r4 shifting

My 700r4 is shifting late after its hot. It shifts OK when I first start it. Also when I shift from 4th to 3rd to 4th,feels like nothing happening.

123pugsy,

I HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH 700R4 IN A S-10 350 SET-UP.
IF YOU HAVE ANYTHING WITH ANY TYPE OF HORSEPOWER YOU ARE BETTER OFF TO REPLACE IT WITH A TURBO 350/400.
THE 700R4 IS ONLY GOOD FOR BURNING UP CLUTCHES. PLUS THEY ARE TWICE AS EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR THAN THE TURBO 350/400.THERE ONLY ADVATAGE IS THE 4TH GEAR FOR GAS MILAGE.

pugsy I had a similar problem with my f-150 aod trans turned out to be a worn out transmission pump, as for dmays suggestion, there are places that offer rebuilt 700s that can handle high horse power engines and with gas above $2.00 a gallon and sure to go higher I would keep the overdrive.

Forgot to mention its only behind stock rebuilt 283.The tranny has about 3000 miles on a fresh rebuild.Its been over a year so its not under warranty.

I tried it this morning on the highway and 4th gear is working.
My milage is ridiculous with this thing.When I step on the gas in 4th on the highway,it chugs along like a Honda Civic going uphill unless you step on it and jumps to 3rd.

I'm running a 1406 Edelbrock carb.I believe its 600 or 650 cfm.Could this be the cause of the lack of pep and bad milage?

Update: When I went out a while ago ,I put it in reverse and the whole truck started shuddering. It did it at slow and fast speeds.

Thoughts anyone?

Pressure test readings at 1000 RPM:
P=114
R=100
N=105
OD=100
D=93
2=90
1=86

on page 5 of this forum is a thread started by JOE B titled 89 suburban 700r4 problem. Briscoe and Crosley give pretty thorough info on trouble shooting this tranny. according to Briscoe pressure in park should be around 65-70 psi. I had some issues with my 700r4 and this thread helped quite a bit.

700's sitting on the garage floor now and a rebuilt th350's up with 3 bolts . That's as far as I got today.I was going to use the 350 in my next project but thought the heck with it and am sticking it in my truck. I'll be tearing down the 700 to see what's going on inside.

700r4 shifting

Pugsy,went away for thanksgiving,or would have posted sooner. Wish trans was still in vehicle, important to know what boost system is doing,1000 rpm then pull cable to max.

The high pressure in park indicates the tv valve sticking. Transgo jr shift kit fixes this. Not sure about the reverse shudder,or chugging in 4th.

What differential ratio are you running? Too low a numerical gear is no good for this trans. Was lockup working?

as briscoe posts the pressures are wrong. Too low in 1 & 2 manual gears too

Several items can cause this from stuck TV , mismatched parts , low/reverse boost valve in backwards. OR a combo of problems.

good luck , post back when you can

Looks like the PT/tv limit ball is missing.

Tv cable was probably adjusted wrong causing high Park pressure reading...

If filter had wrong seal, two seals or out of pump, lockup clutch will drag in reverse. Probably was on in 4th...

Thanks for the responses.I rebuilt the 350 myself because I had this 700 rebuilt "professionally" and I don't like what I got.I will be tearing this down to see whats going on.I will probably post later what I find and ask questions about improving this unit.

Thanks again,Pugsy

Oh yeah,the diff gears are 3.40:1.

I'll be checking the 350 rebuild tomorrow.Maybe I'll be rebuilding the 700 sooner rather than later when I find out my first build attempt is toast.
