700R4 Shifting Question

I have a car with a 700R4 tranny that short shifts from first to second. (It shifts at about 4500rpm.) In all the other gears, it shifts around 6200rpm. How can I "cure" the short shifts?

what year 700 tranny? Sounds like you leave the shifter in "OD" position?

If the 700 is a early (pre mid-1987 tranny) , install a .296 low / reverse boost valve. This will help hold 1st gear longer

Not sure of the year....it's not computer controlled though. I actually have a B&M ratchet shifter in the car and with it in 1, all the way back, it still short shifts. I would love to be able to rev the car on up. I'll have to take it to a local shop to see how old it is. (Came with the car when I bought it.) If it is old enough I'll have to try your idea about the boost valve. Thanks for the advice...I am new to the muscle car game. Got burned out on turbo 4 bangers and decided there is really NO replacement for displacement...LOL

since you post that the tranny shifts to 2nd while the shifter is in "1", you have an early design tranny & valve body( pre 1987)...

install a .296 diameter low / reverse boost valve to delay this up shift.

there are two boost valves, a .500 is the main boost valve and the .296 l/r work together well

looking at my post , I did not make it clear.....

the .500 main boost is an after market boost valve.

The .296 low/reverse boost valve is still availible from GM
