Post 700R4 Shifts

Will a 700R4 shift out of first even with the gear selector "locked" in first? Second question is: Is it possible to properly adjust the TV cable using the Lokar set-up rather than the stock set-up?

Based on reading some of the other posts on this subject, it looks like some trannies will shift whether you want them to or not. None of the TV Cable adjustment messages mentioned using a LOKAR set up.

How can I tell if my tranny is not adjusted correctly or if I have one of the trannies that will shift regardless of what I want to do and when I want to do it?? Under WOT, I want it to shift at somewhere around 5900. It is "automatically" shifting around 4000-4500 under WOT.

BTW.. With the current TV cable adjustment, the car is shifting "normally" except for this business of shifting out of first when it is supposedly "locked in" first. It gives firm crisp shifts, chirps from 1 to 2, and 2 to 3. Downshifts OK........

I am running a hot 350 SBC in a 57 Chevy, fresh 700R4 with shift kit and non lock up converter, 3.73 10 Bolt with Eaton posi.

Thanks, this is majorly frustrating to me as I try to get this rig dialed in. Wish I knew what the heck I was doing!!

Not sure but I think you need a manual valve body to hold gears all day long.

Talking

Monte,
Thanks for the reply. I thought I must have offended the list or something since no one jumped on what I thought was an easy question for anyone who uses a 700R-4.

The funny (odd) thing is that I have searched the web and this forum and that forum and have not seen anyone mention this specifically. So I really appreciate your comeback and idea.

Do you currently have a 700R-4 in your car?

Here is a web-site that has the most info I could find on 700r4 linkage. It would appear that the lokar setup could be made to work, using this info.

Thumbs up

Mrfixmaster.......
Thanks for directions to the 700R-4 site.
There is a lot of very interesting info but the unknown is whether or not the LOKAR TV cable can be installed to give the same "performance" as the GM black plastic cable. I hope someone with this info will jump in and let us know. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Don't see why the two cables would "perform" any differently. Think that the Lokar would look better, but function shouldn't be different. What aspect of the performance are you worried about?

A 700R4 is an extremely complicated transmission. Internal pressures from drive shaft rotation, the tv cable, and several other things cause the shifting to occur. The easiest way to alter the WOT shift points is the weights and springs on the governor. You need to buy a governor adjustment kit from summit or another parts vendor. By changing the weights and springs you can alter the WOT shifts, the low throttle shifts are mainly controlled by the tv cable, but don't adjust it too strongly or it will burn up your transmission, even with a shift kit. The kit will come with more specific instructions, but its not an exact science.
