700r4 shifts out of first then to neutral

transmission was working fine and started this at a stop light. at firsti thought it was stuck in first . i have had the pan droped and no metal or clutch particals were in the pan .removed the gov. and it is free with no broken gear. i dont know if the servo could be the problem or maybe a stuck valve in the valve body? it is a 86 model in a iroc camaro the tv cable has been adjusted by the transmission shop that checked it out. they said without tearing it down they have no idea what is wrong. anybody got any ideas before i spend 1000.00 on a rebuild???

If the pan is still off...there is a hole in the case, just inside the pan rail, under where the servo is,where the pan rail bows out a bit.......if you apply air to that hole, you will see the servo apply the band...even tho its a release pressure port,it will still apply the band with air put to it,and if you look real hard, you will see it apply on the drum.....look to see that the servo snap ring didn't exit the groove it belongs in.........if the pan is on,then yank the servo out of it and have a look ,for, among other things, possibly a broken e-clip ..worst case, the band could possibly be broke at the dowel pin location in the case side, where as the trans would have to come out to confirm....I would check all that first....since the trans is going from 1st to neutral, and not just stuck in 1st,that says that the shift valve and the gov are working.

It all pulls out of the case after you remove the snap ring... in pieces...usually in this order....the cover, then the piston, which may come out the same time as the cover, then the rest of the assy....and a little trick on removing the cover, spray some JB80 on the cover around the snap ring....after you get the snap ring out,put a 90 degree pick behind the blue o-ring that you can see on the cover thru the access slot, and pull on it until you can cut the o-ring with a razor blade...grab one of the now cut ends of the o-ring with a pair of needle nose pliers, and pull on it,and it will roll off the cover until its completely off....and with the o-ring off the cover, that thing will come right out of the case with no effort.
