700r4 speedo question

Well, its about time to pull my 700 project out of the shed and finish it up. All I have left is the VB and speedo.

On the speedo, I don't have either gears but do have a housing that the shop dug out of a drawer and handed to me. From what I"ve been reading, some drive gears won't work with other driven gears, they have a spread that they will work together with and now find out that there are different housings depending on the gear selection.

I"ve checked http://www.transmissioncenter.net/700r4.htm and the speedo section is about 1/3 down the page but i'm still lost on the gears to use as my tires are bigger then the chart and they also don't tell which housing to use.

The equasions that they say to use assume that you already know atleast one gear tooth count, which I don't have.

The closest I can see on the chart is with the 17 tooth drive gear (red) and 45 tooth driven, (light blue) but don't know the part number of the housing to order up that will work with the 45 tooth gear. (another site says to use a 17drive and 42driven???????????? Does anyone know the truth? LOL)

I have 29 1/2" tall tires, as the truck sits in the driveway. My rear gears are 3.42 ratio. Can anyone give me the driven gear and drive gear and housing number that will/may/kinda sorta get me close to being accurate?

Thanks.

Mark

use the 17 drive gear with a 39 tooth driven gear. A 38 tooth may be a bit more accurate... GPS would help there.

the aluminum housing for the driven speed-O gear has numbers on it for the tooth count it works with. the shaft diameter of the driven plastic gear is the difference in what fits what housing .

I gots no numbers for part house refernce.... actually I have the numbers , but i have them safely hidden away from sight somewhere in this office

have fun , good luck , all is wonderful

Thanks Tony..I'll stop by Courtesy Chev and see if they have all I need. Getting anxious about getting it done. Doing the install during the summer was not my main priority, but now that its cooler, it will be much easier.

Maybe you can clarify one thing too. I was under the impression that not all driven gears could be used with all drive gears? Or said this way that one particular drive gear could only be used with certain driven gears, then the next drive gear with another batch of driven gears and so on.

Well, after looking at the charts again, I see that the driven gears can be used with any/all drive gears so I guess that answers that question! LOL Soooooo, never mind on the last question.

But Hey!!! It's finally raining!!
