700r4 tailshaft braces
Hello all,
I am trying to stuff a 700r4 between the stock x-member of a 40 Hudson pickup. In retrospect I probably should have cut out the x-member and made a new crossmember, but I was trying for a quick th350 to 700r4 swap. I have trimmed and banged out almost enough clearance, but now the tailshaft supports are hitting the tunnel in the center of the x-member (see photos below). The left brace is fine, but the right one is touching and shifting the whole thing off-center. How important and common are these braces? I haven't seen them on any photos of other 700r4's. Can I get away with ditching the right brace or modifying it to fit backward (see last photo) or are they crucial? I have 400 SBC with some top-end stuff (edelbrock performer rpm and 600 carb, MSD 6AL, Headers) so I am making less than 400 HP (and probably not much more than 300). Can I slack off and ditch or modify the brace or am I better off sucking it up and cutting a hole in the side of the x-member and bracing it? Thanks. |

Did this trans come out of a Camaro?

Sorry, but I am unsure. It came out of a barn. The Serial Number identifies it as an 1988, but doesn't tell me much more. Were there design differences for 700r4s destined for Camaros over the strandard ones?
Thank you for your question and interst so far. |

some tail housings on the 700-4L60 trans have 2 or 3 spuds -holes- spots for stuff to bolt up.
2 hole units had vibration dampners on them... usually vans , etc. 3 hole tail housings were for the F body cars(Camaro - firebird) you can remove these brackets and cut the aluminum spuds down as you need.... OR buy - find another tail hosuing with no spuds on it. Your trans case does have the two holes for the mount to bolt onto it?

Yes, I do have the holes for the transmission mount, so I have that going for me.
It sounds like I don't need to worry about keeping the brackets, since they must be vibration dampeners on the 2 spuds (Thanks Crosley), so I am going to ditch them. That should give me plenty of clearance around the tailshaft. Now I can get to work on making a bracket to bolt the trans mount to the bottom of the x-member and get this project back on track. Thanks for easing my mind. |
