700r4 tci valve body

was wondering if anyone else out there has been running the tci valve body that came out several months ago. supposed to keep line pressure at at least 200 psi so your tv cable adjustment is for shift points... the idea being that you wont burn clutches due to a mis adjusted tv cable...anyway blew one tranny and now it left me on the side of the road again with nothing...no gears except park...not funny havent torn it down yet but was trying to figure out if i should ditch it on the next build...I will say it worked nice when it was working. reaching out to you guys is always better than dealing w some marketing people trying to bs you ...thanks in advance for any advice....adrules12

First, welcome to Hotrodders.com.

I think you are in for a little quality one on one with your trans.

Is this a full manual VB? If not, then there is a device called a governor that alters shift points. The TV cable just ramps up the pressure according to load/throttle position. These two are closely related.

What was the condition of the fluid? We need more details.

What is being talked about in the original post is a ; "constant pressure " valve body.

TCI modifies a v-body for full main line pressure all the time. The TV circuit still operates as original with shift timing changes as the cable is pulled .

THe problem with the constant pressure v-body is line pressure is very high all the time. Depends on the boost valves installed to the max pressure that is reached. I have seen 320psi max pressure with the large boost valves installed.

High pressure creates harsh shifts , harsh engagement , higher oil temps.

Crosley's right, And it adds more pump strain & wear. Since the TV cable doesn't control line pressure with the Constant pressure VB even part/light throttle shifts are harsh.
If you're are having problems setting the TV cable correctly you should check out BTO's TV Made Easy setup. They have very thorough Info, directions & parts.
Read through this and it will help explain all the settings.

One would wonder if that's too much pressure for the street. I'd bet the guy has a broken pump rotor and/or slide.

Could've taken out a sprag. I bet it shifted like ton 'o' bricks.

Hell it could be anything.

the 700r4 isue..

yup the knowledge out there is flowing thanks...so the first break was a drum the name is escaping me it is heald in place w a large c type clip and has teeth it shattered some of the teeth which made it fall out of place...this time i was going down hill and wasnt into it just cruising and it started to make rattling noises as if something came apart and then nothing ...pulled over shut it down went to re start and it dragged so hard wouldnt start...thought the coverter bolts may have loosened but nope let it cool and it did start...maybe the converter let go...just havent had a chance to pull the tranny but my builder was concerned that constant pressure could be an issue and yes it was a very firm shift no matter rpm...thanks for the in put will let you know after the tear down what is found. you guys have given some things to consider...adrules12

700 r4 update (diagnosis)

thanks again to all who had advise...tranny was looked at the converter was questionable....one thing for sure the front of the pump had a broken tooth and the pumped was jammed...the 2 teeth that the converter slides into in the front of the pump was broken in several places....my tranny guy said the ring on the outside that lays flat against it is usually is the first to break before the teeth do.upgraded from a 10 vain to a 13 vain pump (parts from a 4L60E) next we put a shaft inside the converter and turning by hand didnt have much drag and was kinda sloppy...regardless picked up another converter...how can you check a converter to tell for sure if its functioning proprely ? so not sure if the converter kicked off the problem of the pump teeth letting go or from that high pressure valve body ?...otherwise didnt think i was that hard on that tranny...running a small block chevy w about 400 horse 425 fl. t. will be putting it back in soon will let those interested how it shakes out thanks again ADRULES12

Glad to see you've found the problem. Thanks for the feedback.

Oftentimes the rings of a 'vane' style pump will break causing all kinds of havoc. Increased pressure demands is hard on stock parts.

Torque converters have a turbine and a stator that 'hang' on the input shafts of an auto trans. So it's hard to determine the health of a TC while separated and lying on the bench. The stator has a one way roller bearing that can sometimes fail. But again, hard to see into the TC snout and check. Usually if the stator one-way fails you will loose all drive forward and reverse. Rising trans temperatures will aggravate this accompanied by very strange grinding noises. It's good to see that you replaced the TC anyway.

thanks c-10...yup thats how I would have described the failure sound...a strange grinding rateling noise and no gears ...cant take a chance at this point w a questionable converter...will be running roughly same stall (2200-2500)not to radical but get it up before it grabs...its 99 % a street car so still makes it fun to drive . I picked up a 91 700r4 to practice on going to get a how to dvd on re building the 700r and will have some guidance at this point would like to have a spare around used to turn rench for a living but now its a hobby...always more to learn and opening up an automatic is a new adventure...but need to de-mystify things a little. hey dont know if you like westerns but if you see the film APPALOOSA look for MACKIE SHELTON (thats me) not a huge roll but its a strong film worth seeing thanks again hope to be popping that thing in tonite will let you know how she goes...adrules12

she will be going back in this evening...hopefully have some fun...and maybe not break anything ? one way to find out...yeah good flick ed harris did a great job...1882 in the west... thanks again ....adrules12

700r4 rebuild kit ?

anyone have a recommendation for a re build kit for a 700r4? its high milage tranny out of a 91 wagon...know the clutches are toast...should i wait to open it up see what ive got. thinking it would be nice to put back together asap in case no hard parts were broken have a kit ready to go (probably some kind of shift kit also)...any thoughts let me know thanks ...adrules12 ( this will be my spare 700r)

700r4 bent flex plate

well went to put the re built 700r in and found the flex plate was tweeked....what would cause it to be bent in toward the motor ? in other words the out side of the flex plate was bent towards the engine ....guess this had something to do w my pump failure ...not sure if the converter kicked off the series of events or what ? will be going w a heavy duty flex plate and take it from there...any thoughts about the cause of this ? thanks , adrules12

Wow, that's definately not right. And yes that would surely take out a pump.

The turbine, stator splines as well as pump cogs all must be engaged first before mounting the trans to the engine.

The TC should only have to slide forward FREELY 1/8 to 1/4 inch towards the flexplate.

Does this vehicle have a mid-plate style engine mount?

700r installed

to all who gave me advice i put the 700r in last night...ended up w a TCI flexplate .035 thicker than stock put in a TCI BREAKAWAY converter supposed to around 2200-2400 im running 3.73 xe 268 comp cams in a SB CHEVY anyway stalls closer to 2000 which is a little disapointing going to be doing a head cam header swap down the line will probably go to a higher stall at that point would like to be around 2500...the next step in TCI is around 3000- 3500 didnt want to be quit that high...anyway the tranny is working nice is still a "firm shift" see how she holds up. anyone been running a stall there happy with ? havent heard many nice things about the b and m converters hughes may be cool...obviously gotta mach it to the engine set up...thanks again to all the sharp advice it was right on...adrules12
