700r4 torque converters-identification

hi, i am a 46 year old with a 55chevy pickup. i have been in streetrods now for about 7 years now. i have been given a 700r4 to look at and was told it had been converted to a non-electrical lockup 700r4. the torque converter that came with it might be informative if i can identify it as a locking or non-locking converter. the only markings on it are D-5 stamped around the equator of it. is there such a thing as a non-electrical locking 700r4(no solenoid, pressure switch, or any wiring)? how do you identify a torgue converter that you know nothing about? i would appreciate any help.

Welcome. Being new to the site, you need to be sure to read the "Read Me' posts at the beginning of each forum. The ones here for example recommend that you just post a general introduction here and post tech questions in the appropriate tech forum. This will give you the best chance for a good answer.

A converter guy can check the converter for a lock up plate.... takes knowledge of how to check. ALL factory 700 converters were built as lock up.

Yes , the tranny can be configured for non electric lock up . It takes a certain style of v-body and parts and mods. The solenoid is usely installed in this setup with a check ball in the end to block oil flow

I prefer electrical lock up for better control if needed
