700r4 tranny problems

after intalling the torque convertor on my brand new bowtie overdrives 700r4, me and my dad went to bolt it to the engine, and they wouldn't come together. So I took the convertor back off of the trans, and apparently, we didn't seat the convertor on the pump prong thingies right, and they are now broken off. How hard is it to take the trans apart and put in a new pump, and is there any way we may have damaged anything else.

Thanks guys, I've got to slow down and start being more careful...

re: 700r4 tranny problems

If you're referring to the tabs for the pump gears you'll have to get a gasket and new gears. I'm not familiar with the 700R4 but most pumps are similar. Make sure you take the gear (with the broken tabs) to the parts house since they may come in different thicknesses and you want to get the correct one.

If the 700R4 is like the TH-400 and TH-350 then it's a fairly simple procedure.

On of the trans specialists may be able to elaborate on this a bit.

It's a fairly easy fix to replace a front pump. Next time make sure the converter is fully seated.

re: 700r4 tranny problems

i did the same thing on my first install 25 something years ago!
the key is 3 clicks or bumps.
put the convert in place and slowly spin it while pushing(slightly) back (toward the tail shaft) it should fall into place after 3 clicks .
you know you have it right when you are unable to slip your fingers in between the bell housing and the converter at the top.
take your time learn it good and the speed will come to you naturally
good luck

re: 700r4 tranny problems

you need to determine what you wish to replace, the whole pump or the pump rotor only. 700 pumps have a rotor, slide & vanes not gears.

If you repalce the pump rotor only you need to verify thickness and clearance of the rotor to the pump.

iF you go with a complete pump , often they come partially assembled NOT ready to run. The pump havles need to be aligned & bolted together. Then you need to swap the valves from one assembly to the fresh unit

Another 700 r4 problem. Shift points occasionally change to a higher rpm. Any ideas. How hard is a rebuild on that unit? I am a fairly competent mechanic and was succesful in rebuilding my honda accord trans.

My son had a big Bronco AOD that did a similar thing. Turned out the lockup in the converter would slip and shutter a little. Tried Lucas and it helped for a while, finally had to replace the converter. Found out that this was THE EXPENSIVE F-350 4 wd trans behind a 351W.

Just say you will do everything possible not to make the same mistake.
I had my 700R4 rebuild and the shop gave me such a good price on R and R (remove and replace Labor)
I drove it there and picked it up 3 1/2 Days later. 190.00 Bucks.
That price beat me laying outside in the parking lot and finding a knowledgeable helper.

It can be done
However you must measure and check certain items with that trans.
I did not do mine because I needed my truck as soon as possible.
My first 700R rebuild will be for my recreation vehicle and not my job transportation
