700r4 troubleshooting

I just put a 700R4 in 94 Blazer (fullsize) 5.7L. It belongs to my father-in-law, but he asked me to put it in for him. The old tranny was the same kind and it lost anything above 1st gear, when it would shift, it would just wind up like it was slipping. So he got another 700 from the junkyard and i put it in. I didn't know that he had a new torque converter for it cuz he didn't tell me, so i put the old one back in. Now the tranny that i just put in goes into reverse good w/ plenty of power, and it goes into 1st fine with all the power and torque you would expect 1st to have. It just won't leave first gear. it doesn't matter where i put the shifter 1,2,3,or D it stays in first. I really want to look at all my options before i pull it back out to change the converter, I dont want fix it if its not broken. Would the torque converter cause this, or is this something else??? please help....
Danny

A 1994 blazer(5.7 full size) should have a 4L60E trans. Full electronic pressure control and shifting.

Please explain.

700R4 troubleshooting

Well it may be the 4L60E but the salvage yard he got it from had it labeled as a 700, i thought it was a 4L60E cuz it had all the electric plugs on it and no modulator valve but i was goin with what the guy told me. Either way would the T/C cause this to happen?? I always thought that if your T/C goes bad, It ain't gonna move at all not just cause a shiftign problem. Is this right??

What should i start checking first, i was gonna start with the governer unless someone here has some good advice for me, cuz i've never really worked with the inerds of a tranny more than a shift kit or fluid change.

real simple to tell a 4L60e... large electrical connector on passenger side... about 1.5 inches in diameter. NO cable for TV on this trans.

700r4 - 4L60 has a cable on the passenger side near the filler tube hole.

1994 GM vehicle RWD should have a 4L60E to my experience.... but you never know what happened in 1994.

No Drive

If a 700R4 or 4L60 won't upshift it's usually because the TV cable was not adjusted correctly and the 3-4 bands are fried. What did the fluid smell like? If that TV is out of adjustment you can fry that trans in a matter of minutes. If it is electronic you should be able to have a transmission shop run a code check to diagnos the problem.
