Cool 700R4 vs. 4L60

Latest poop I have is that the 4L60, which is an upgraded 700R4, is the way to go for long-haul cruisers that want a little grunt in the low end (3.00:1 low gear and 0.67:1 4th). You can go up to a slightly higher rear-end ratio and still have off-the-line performance. In my case, building a '54 Bel Air for 2005 Power Tour, will go up to 3.55 from 3.73, and cruise like it has 2.38!
Phoenix transmissions specializes in the 4L60 and kits. Set up is critical, but you don't need the chip. Very simple electrical.

700R4 vs 4L60

Just thought I would mention the reason for the name change. Previous to 1988 GM had the 125C ,400T4 ,the 2004R, the 700R4, the 400THM In order to come up with a new system of rating the transmissions according to speeds.axis, torque rating the new system arrived.The first number is for speeds ex. 3,4,5,6, the second letter T is for transverse, meaning front wheel drive from side to side and The L is for Longitudinal rear wheel drive engine in the front. The next number is a GM torque scale the higher the number the higher the torque capacity. and the E designates Electronic shift control ,So a 4L60 was the new name for the 700R4 which had notjing to do with the updates were to arrive that year .The 125C changed to 3T40 ,the 440T4 changed to 4T60 the the 2004R was dropped in 1989 and the 400 Changed to 3L80.
