I just installed a 700R4 from a wrecking yaRD IN MY 1984 s-15 2.8 2X2 gOOD REVERSE. nICE 1ST & 2ND BUT THAT'S ALL. iT WON'T SHIFT TO 3RD OR 4TH. i'VE VARIED THE tv CABLE SETTING BOTH WAYS FROM CORRECT POSITION. aLSO FOUND THAT WHEN i PLUG THE CONNECTER ONTO THE LOCK-UP CONVERTOR PLUG IT BLOWS THE FUSE. aNY IDEAS ?

Of course many things can attribute to the problems mentioned, but if it were me, I'd take it back to the parts yard or rebuild it.

Couple things;

Did you note the condition of the original fluid if there was any still in the trans? Was it burnt smelling and brown?

If so, the 3-4 clutch is more than likely burnt up.

The TCC solenoid is stuck open and/or shorted.. this would explain the blown fuse.

Thanx for your input. I guess I'll pull the dang thing back out & take it back. I wish the wrecking yard had some way of knowing the trannys were good or not before they sell them

Agreed.

Engines are easy, you just start them up and listen. It's next to impossible to 'road test' an incoming salvage vehicle to determine how the trans is working. So we/you get to sort the junk from the fruit.

At least most parts yards have a warranty period. Just think if you had to pay to R&R the stuff too!

Not to mention would you really want a salvage yard to test a OD Auto tranny?
