700r4 won't shift

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum, but hope to gain some insight as well as provide any info that I can offer. My issue is with my 85 monte carlo with an aftermarket 700r4 trans. I bought the car from my friend's estate after he passed a couple years ago, but was involved in some of the building of this car before he passed. The engine runs perfect but the car will only run in first and second gear. I haven't had it up to highway speeds yet because the car isn't completed, but I've been in second gear @ 4000 rpms and still no shift. I've read other threads on here about checking the gov and tv cable adjustment, and I was wondering which route I should take first. Some people that I work with also said to check the wiring on the trans because of the electronic overdrive. I don't have any prior experience with any Chevy or any transmissions for that matter, so I could use the advice. Any help will be appreciated.

if it was a governor problem, the trans wont shift at all. if it was a tv problem, it wont shift out of first till probably 25-35 mph, and will be quite firm and it would more than likely have 3rd and 4th if you leg it out under full throttle.
if the trans is an unknown piece, it is not out of the question that the 3-4 clutches are burnt as they are a common failure item.

The trans was bought from a reputable shop as a new (rebuilt ) piece. I helped him get it to his shop anf helped actually bolt it in the car. I would like to think that this was an easier fix although I guess it is possibility that it needs to be replaced. Is there anything that I should look at before pulling the trans? Thanks for the quick response.

How long has it sat?

CGlaze 05-11-2011 07:06 PM

It gets started up about once a week, but it has only been "driven" once or twice in the last 3 years. Be driven, I mean it has been taken down the street in my neighborhood (less than .5 miles. I didn't want to take a test drive until I figure out this trans.

Try putting it up on stands let it get warm and popping it through the gears.

My Vette shifts at about 4200 under normal driving, when it does shift its very crisp.

How is the 1-2 shift?

I will try that, thanks. The 1-2 shift is at around 3k rpm's and it is a firm kick into 2nd.

corvettes use a different governor than the majority of 700's put in chevy cars and trucks.

to the OP, its not out of the question that the valve body may have some sticky shift valves. one question, did the trans ever get 3rd and 4th gears? theres another post in here i replied to that has the basic same problem as your having and theres the possibility if the trans doesnt have 3rd or 4th gears that the 2-3 accumulator capsule that is behind the 2-4 servo is either bad or the old one was removed and a new one was never installed during the build. so, as long as the fluid has not been run low, and does not smell burnt, i wouldnt think the trans would need to be pulled.

No, this trans has never seen 3rd or 4th great since it's been installed in this car.
