700r4 won't shift into 3rd????? HELP!!!!

Ok, here is my problem.... I have a 1983 Chevrolet 3/4 Ton pickup that I've been working on lately turning into a convertable... It has a built 350ci engine and a 700r4 that was fine until I built up the 350ci .......

It is shifting from 1st to 2nd but it will NOT shift into 3rd ..... Does anyone have any ideas??? When it shifts out of 2nd and supposedly into 3rd, if I "Floor" it, it will move the truck, but at a very high RPM range and is very weak, but when I let off of the throttle after WOT (Wide Open Throttle) it seems like it shifts into 4th / OD ........ Again, does anyone PLEASE have any ideas???

Just so you know, I tightened up the 2nd gear band a little bit, and now, in L2, it'll go up to 70mph

I don't know much about trannys but it sounds like rebuild time.

I'm interested in how you're doing the convertable top on your
truck.
I had a 82 Ford van with the roof cut off, but it wasn't road worthy. I've been wanting another open top truck or van.

Well, I'd sell the truck as it is right now, but I can tighten up the 3rd gear band (but I don't know how) and my buddy that builds custom transmissions "Guarantees" that it will shift and drive in 3rd, but I don't even know where the adjuster is for the 3rd gear band.... If you are interested, here are pics in the mean time while in transformation ... HERE

Oh I see why you are making it open top!

and I ment I wanted to build my own chop top van/truck.
it's the most fun you can have with a sawzall. I highly recommend it. and everyone waved when I drove it around

the attention you will get will make it well worth building a new windshild for it. so I think you should keep it, and I'm sure the
guy that would buy it, would send the body to the junkyard.
you don't really want it to end up there do you?

I already drive it around due to just needing a motorcycle helmet to be "Legal"... lol, and everyone usually waves and smiles, it's really fun to drive, I love the truck, especially for the $300 I bought it for and the 350ci that I personally built is REALLY nice in the truck, just not now that the tranny won't drive very well in 3rd

well I'm not sure if the driveshaft will fit with a TH350, but I would
rather spend money on a TH350.

Cool

If your tranny buddy is telling you to tighten up the band for 3rd gear in a 700r4, find a new tranny guy.

There is no band for 3rd gear in the 700. The only band inside is for 2nd and 4th gears.

it sounds like the 3/4 clutch pack has burned up. this is a common failure of a 700/4L60 tranny since they were introduced.

If you wish to replace the 700r4 with a T-350 tranny, find a T-350 with a 9 inch tail housing. Measure the tail housing with a tape. The T-350's came in 6 , 9 & 12 inch tail housings

I'm sure Crosley is correct, but did anyone mention checking the adjustment on the TV cable?

Of course, if you've been driving with that adjusted incorrectly, it's time for a new transmission anyway.
