'71 Gmc 2500

I JUST PERCHUST THE TRUCK FROM MY UNCLE WHO BOUGHT IT NEW IN 71 IT HAS A 350 4BBL/4 SPD WITH LONG THROW SHIFTS . MY UNCLE SAID IT IS THE TOUGHEST 3/4 TON HE COULD BUY IN '71. i HAVE WANTED THIS TRUCK SINCE I WAS 16. THE BODY IS RUSTED, SO I'LL NEED NEW PANELS, NEW CAB, BED U NAME IT EXCEPT HOOD AND GRILL. WELL ENOUGH WITH BRAGGING, MY QUESTION IS THE MOTOR RAN GREAT LAST APRIL BUT THEN SHE DIDN'T WANT TO START ON SATURDAY AND WHEN SHE DID START I HELD IT AT 1/2 THROTTLE IT SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS LUGGIN, ANY IDEAS WOULD HELP. oH WHY WOULD THE SHIFTS BE SO LONG WHITH THIS 4 SPD, AND ANYBODY KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE TRANS I MIGHT HAVE?

PAT

P.S. i NORMALY NOW FORDS, 350'S R NEW TO ME,

P.S. I ASKED MY UNCLE WHAT HE THOUGHT OF CHEVY, HE TOLD ME THAT CHEVY IS THE AFTER BIRTH OF GMC.

GREAT TRUCK!!! i have a 71 half ton, kick arse trucks. there are tons of aftermarket goodies out there for them. My first thing i would do is order a catalog from www.lmctruck.com great stuff great price, send me a PM and i'll give ya links to all sorts of great info. also if it still has points throw it in the trash and get ur self a junk yard HEI unit and rebuild it, way better, there was just a post about it there are pics in my gallary. as for your running problem, i'd go through all the basics, has it sat for the past year?? bad gas, prolly needs plugs and wires... upgrade ignition, just ask for plugs and wires for a 80's something truck with a 5.7 and you'll be fine. ummm yeah, id say tune er up and see what comes of it.

GMC means "Gota Mechanic Coming"

The trans is a granny 4 speed this by all rights is a great trans but made for pulling not speed... Also you can find all the sheet metal you need here also I agree a mid 70`s to early 80`s HEI (NON-ESC control) and wires & plugs with fresh fuel will do wonders...

thats a two way street "got a mechanics coming" ford and dodge lovers will say as an insult when in reality their mechanic is coming in it
simply stated G M C STANDS FOR GOT MORE CLASS

any who yes 71 gmc 2500 is probably one of the toughest trucks ever built that was the pinnacle for chevy / gmc69 to 72 there is still a bunch on the road hauling stuff all over the place
that drive train is made for working.. hauling a trailer, not the track
pull your race car to the track

smog motors, in 1975 when cats were mandated in cars, later for pickups. Late 70s cat/emissions pumps/hoses/bs. I dont know why they're "bad" other than in stock form they guzzled gas and couldnt haul ***** like the pre-smoggers

please dont type in ALL CAPS that's really annoying and it's known to be "yelling". thanks much.

It probably has a 4:10 rear.

You've probably got the SM465 4-speed tranny. Tough transmission, but not really good for speedshifting. And yes you probably have a 4.10 rear, most likely a Dana 60. Got any pics of the truck?
